Homework Guidelines
The following are suggestions regarding the preparation of your
homework assignments. On each Homework:
- PRINT your name (in bold readable print) on every page.
Staple pages together, and make sure to include the homework
assignment number. Each solution on a given homework writeup should
also clearly indicate which problem it is the solution for. Please
provide your solutions in the same order as assigned. BE LEGIBLE!
- Lack of clarity will be penalized, even if the answer is
correct.
- If you cannot solve a problem but you have an idea, do not
hand in bull--. Rather, indicate how far you got and explain
what your ideas are (do not forsake the god of partial credit).
- In any complicated construction indicate what you are doing
and why you think it works, REGARDLESS of the wording of the
problem. As a good guideline, ask yourself, ``If someone else read
this would they understand it.''
e.g.
Problem: Show that the following languages are context free by exhibiting a grammar that
generates them.
Just putting a grammar down without any explanation will NOT suffice.
- Do not use a theorem to prove that theorem.
e.g.
Problem: Prove that the sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle equals the square of the hypotenuse.
Proof: True by the pythagorean theorem.
- Use only theorems in the assigned reading to solve a problem.
This is because the problem may be a special case of an advanced
theorem, but the intention of the assignment is that you work out
the special case.
- If you quote a previous homework or exam question, make it
clear that you understand the previous problem.
- Remember that the homework represents a very large portion of
your grade. Doing well on the exams (particularly the final) while
not doing much of the homework does not a satisfying grade make.
