Not well versed on basements either - though I know lots of them around here 
that have sump pumps to help keep the water level low.

I did get versed on home inspector's liability, though.  At least here in 
Washington State, they are pretty well (read Entirely) protected from 
responsibility for mistakes.  Now, if you could somehow show that they 
knowingly left out something on the report with intent to defraud, you might 
have something.  Sure, you can sue either way, but I didn't get very far 
with that when it was my turn.
