Addendum to Media Grrl vs riot grrrl

So here I am, 5 years since I first became involved. The first time i heard about riot grrrl was as a sophmore in high school. My english teacher, a woman who was regarded as a bitch and seemed to pick on the guy more than the gals, had a copy of the newsweek article on her corkboard. I don't remember exactly what happened but she showed it to me thinking I'd have an interest in it after some discussion we had. It looked really neat so I kept my eyes peeled. I had no idea how to contact anyone like that. A while later I noticed an ad in the kids section of the chicago tribune, of all places, for riot grrrl Chicago. Around the same time there was an article in the tribune on riot grrrls in general. So i wrote to them and got a lot of info. I don't think the group lasted long, but I did recieve one really cool letter from them in which they'd gotten a hold of a bunch of tribune envelopes that were pre-paid and sent out their fliers with them. This essay/paper was for an English class and suposed to be on a "trend" or "fad" but I kind of mutated it into what I have been wanting to write about riot grrrl and the media exposure it had. So it might seem a little weird because I was trying to make it fit this assignment and still contain everything I felt was important about the collective. I hope my ideas have come across clear enough that you can relate to, ponder or just understand the effect the media has had on riot grrrl culture. Let me know what you think or if I'm wrong about what happened to the chicago group. tankgirl@cerebro.xu.edu I plan to have all my articles and and fliers up here eventually. -- 03/17/97
